Let the sun shine in, as Valentina Peleggi begins with a tribute to a very uncommon woman indeed, and then heads south to her native Italy. Alma Mahler holds the key to the first part of the story: Korngold’s Violin Concerto is a deliriously romantic tribute to Alma, drenched in Californian sunshine by a fellow-exile from a vanished Vienna, and it’s played by the brilliant Simone Lamsma. But Alma’s own neglected songs have recently come back into the spotlight, and these new orchestral adaptations by Roxanna Panufnik are a tribute to an inimitable musical voice. And then, in a blaze of sonic glory, we’re off to Italy for Tchaikovsky’s ardent retelling of a tale from Dante, a moment of pure sweetness from the world of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and Respighi’s rarely heard Church Windows: four sacred images, recreated in music shot through with coloured light.
Prelude: 6.45pm in the Recital Room (free to ticket-holders, subject to seating availability): Composer Roxanna Panufnik introduces her adaptation of Mahler.
