This is music that captures the spirit of downtown New York in the ’70s – a time when Philip Glass faced little more than blank incomprehension verging on insulting neglect from the music establishment.

He found his way forward through the wider artistic community and many early concerts took place in galleries and studios rather than concert halls.

Music With Changing Parts was first performed in a gallery, amplified so loud that people took a seat outside on the sidewalk to listen. Groups of teenagers danced in the street and musicians in adjoining buildings joined in in the distance. Icebreaker bring the spirit of the age alive, giving a kick to Glass’s pulsing rhythms, and an uplifting free spirit to their own interpretation of this seminal work.

This afternoon's performance will feature live visuals from the cutting-edge Glasgow-based collective of audio/visual artists Pointless Creations (resident visual artists at The Arches' club night Death Disco) featuring animated versions of Heather Lander's paintings.
