Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary relationship with the millionairess Nadezhda von Meck, whom he never properly met but who supported him financially over many years, was undoubtedly a source of inspiration to him. It was her understanding and comforting words that encouraged him to carry on after the unsuccessful premiere of his Fifth Symphony. Now, of course, the symphony is one of his most popular works, and one that makes a glorious end to the season.
In Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto (please note change to originally advertised concerto) Ilan Volkov and the orchestra renew their collaboration with Brazilian-born Nelson Freire, who is increasingly recognised as one of the most outstanding pianists in the world today.
6.45pm Pre-Concert Prelude (in the Recital Room): Andrew Trinick, Outreach Producer BBC SSO, in conversation with Ilan Volkov, Principal Guest Conductor, about his distinctive approach to programming and his life as a conductor.
In a change to the originally advertised work, Nelson Freire plays Chopin’s, Barcarolle in F sharp minor, Op.60.
