The ancient roots of Minimalism are laid bare in the music of Arvo Pärt, more than in any other composer’s work.
It was in the mid-1960s that he turned against the big scale orchestral, ‘experimental’ works of his early years and rediscovered the beauty of simplicity and directness. His inspirations were Bach, plainchant, ancient choral music and bells – and there is no more astounding piece of work by him than Kanon Pokajanen. 90 minutes of staggeringly beautiful singing, strongly reminiscent of the Russian Orthodox tradition.
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir has Pärt’s music in their blood – there is no better way to experience this piece.
