Few people can boast a deeper, more sympathetic and simply communicative passion for J.S. Bach than Dr John Butt.

In this illustrated lecture he explores an aspect of Bach’s music that became a particular concern at Cöthen. As his role was to provide music to a prince who was no ordinary music lover, Bach concentrated on pieces that were both pleasing and teasing on the ear: delightful patterns full of emotional and sensual promise, but ones that also led the connoisseur up a sonic garden path, imagining sounds and images that were only just hinted at in the prescribed sounds.

Dr Butt is joined by cellist Philip Higham for the lecture which includes extracts from Bach’s Cello Suites.
