2010 sees the 60th birthday of one of Scotland’s most admired and widely performed composers: James Dillon, born in Glasgow in 1950.

Here the BBC SSO marks that birthday by bringing to fruition one of Dillon’s most ambitious and epic undertakings – the first complete performance of his sequence of nine pieces, Nine Rivers. The metaphor of a river works its way through the nine pieces shifting focus and meaning, from a meditation on time to environmental concerns to the nature of musical language itself. The sequence is well suited to the City Halls building as Dillon deploys very different scales of ensemble, allowing performances of the different sections in both the Grand Hall and the Old Fruitmarket, as the audience moves to and from the one venue to the other.

Steven Schick and Jessica Cottis will conduct the work (please note change to originally advertised artist).

With the exception of the Pre-Concert Introduction the event will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The performance of Nine Rivers will start at 1.30pm in the Grand Hall and is scheduled to finish at approximately 6.15pm. There will be two intervals. All seating is unreserved. Tickets: Free, limited to 2 tickets per application (children under age of 12 not admitted) – please note that tickets are available by on-line application only.
