In 1999, Maxwell Davies’ Trumpet Quintet was given its English premiere by John Wallace and the Yggdrasil String Quartet.
As part of the Scottish Ensemble 40th anniversary celebrations, they are joined by trumpeter, Mark O’Keeffe, in this work that, for all its occasional flights of fancy, is subdued and measured, using the trumpet not as a festive protagonist but as a subtle colouristic force within a string texture that unfolds slowly and with strong momentum.
A Q&A session featuring Peter Maxwell Davies will take place after the concert.
