Whether she is evangelising for classical music in schools, bringing music to our TV screens, or performing with the world’s great orchestras, Tasmin Little brings a freshness and passion to all she does. Her programme here spans the 20th century and three of the UK’s member nations. Elgar’s late Sonata reflects the devastating impact World War I had on the composer. At its heart there is a Romance which is vintage wistful and elegiac Elgar. Ferguson, the Northern Irish representative here, lived almost long enough to see in the new Millennium, but remained a dyed-in-the-wool Romantic despite the changing musical landscape around him. His Sonata is accessible, engaging music – a pungent contrast to Macmillan’s serene but intense Kiss on Wood: one of his many works inspired by the mysteries of Easter.
