The Scottish Ensemble continue their tradition of ‘Christmas with a twist’ in this candlelit concert. The composer John Woolrich has curated a special programme to frame his new work for the Scottish Ensemble, ‘Capriccio’.

The programme opens with the Prelude to Capriccio from Richard Strauss’s opera, a work of searingly intense emotion. The second half of the concert is devoted to Schoenberg’s bittersweet and gorgeous Verklarte Nacht. These pieces frame the Scottish première of John Woolrich’s new piece, and John has also arranged Hugo Wolf’s Italian Songs for the Ensemble.

There are Christmas concerts, and then there are the Scottish Ensemble Christmas concerts. (The Telegraph)
