Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony was conceived on a truly ‘heroic’ scale – it’s by far the biggest symphony ever composed up to that time. Originally meant as a tribute to Napoleon, Beethoven famously retracted the dedication, disillusioned by Napoleon’s megalomania. However the music endures as a universal homage to the noblest aspirations of man, with the power to overawe the listener through the intensity of its drama. Donald Runnicles opens the concert with Berlioz’s sparkling overture to his opera Béatrice et Bénédict, based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The young violinist Vilde Frang joins the orchestra for Brahms’ great Violin Concerto.

6.45pm Pre-Concert Prelude (in the Recital Room): Professor Barry Cooper of the University of Manchester, and one of the world’s leading experts on the music of Beethoven, explores the ‘Eroica’ Symphony. approx. 10 minutes after main concert

Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after the end of the main concert): Pianist Scott Mitchell plays the Fantasien, Op.116 by Brahms.

Please note that violinist Janine Jansen will not perform at this concert and has been replaced by Vilde Frang.
