Three works commissioned for the Scottish Ensemble form the programme of our Easter celebration. We join forces with the chamber choir Tenebrae and our cultural neighbours, Cryptic, to celebrate James MacMillan’s 50th birthday.
Originally commissioned by the BBC for the Scottish Ensemble, MacMillan’s epic Seven Last Words from the Cross is one of his most masterful works. This is complemented by John Tavener’s spellbinding Tears of the Angels and a new work by Nigel Osborne, Seven Words, Seven Icons, Seven Cities.
Internationally acclaimed Cryptic which specializes in the visualization of music, has commissioned video artists James Houston and Angelica Kroeger to collaborate with Cryptic’s Artistic Director Cathie Boyd to design the accompanying visuals for these concerts. Houston and Boyd will work together to create a film responding to MacMillan’s Seven Last Words while Kroeger and Boyd will produce a short film for Osborne’s commission, Seven Words. Boyd will further enhance the concert’s ambiance with lighting.
On Sunday 28 March at 2pm in the City Halls, the Scottish Ensemble in partnership with Glasgow's Concert Halls are hosting a choral workshop for community and church choirs with James MacMillan and choral director, Mark Hindley. The workshop is linked to the Scottish Ensemble's performance of MacMillan's Seven Last Words in this concert and will focus on his work.
A combined ticket to attend both the concert and the workshop costs just £18 (£15 concession and £10 for Under 26). Please call the box office on 0141 353 8000 and quote "Workshop" when booking.
