Discover how CERN and LHC will guide us on a journey to the heart of matter: with music by Bach, Mozart and Kreisler, in this lecture presented by Professor Brian Foster, of Oxford University, with violinist Jack Liebeck.

Looking at Einstein’s life and involvement with music and how his ideas have shaped our concepts of space, time and the evolution of the Universe, this lecture links Einstein’s favourite instrument, the violin, with many of the concepts of modern physics that he did so much to found.

Relativity, E=mc2, the discovery of radioactivity, and Einstein’s role in understanding the atom and developing the atomic bomb, lead into an outline of the “Standard Model” of particle physics and cosmology, as Professor Brian Foster will discuss. This outstandingly successful theory has many problems which will be addressed by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva.

Punctuated by interludes of music related to Einstein, performed by Jack Liebeck, the lecture describes this machine, a technological marvel, shows how the experiments can reconstruct the conditions of the Big Bang and what they might find, including the latest news from Geneva.

The lecture will conclude with a duet for two violins by Mozart in which lecturer and soloist will join forces, paying tribute to Einstein’s lifelong love of chamber music.

Recommended for Adults and children aged 15 and above.

This lecture will be followed by a recital at 7.45pm with Jack Liebeck on violin and pianist Ashley Wass. The programme of the recital will reflect the musical life and tastes of Einstein, as outlined in the lecture. Einstein worshipped Mozart and himself played the Mozart Sonata which Jack and Ashley will play. Tickets for this are £12. Entry to the above lecture is free with a ticket to the recital.
