Johannes Brahms didn’t believe in God, but he believed in love. And when he wrote his German Requiem, he aimed to console the living with some of the most moving, most heartfelt and – yes – most spiritual music ever written. Lawrence Renes conducts one of the world’s great operatic singers, Canadian bass-baritone Gerald Finley, in the latest masterpiece from Peter Lieberson, whose heart-rending Neruda Songs stormed the classical charts in the USA.
