Premiered at Celtic Connections 2007, Under One Sky was commissioned as a joint celebration of Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival. John McCusker’s suite of tunes and songs explores and ultimately celebrates the relationships between folk music and other genres, notably rock and pop, in today’s vibrant folk scene.

As well as John himself, the line-up features some of Scotland’s best musicians – Gaelic songbird Julie Fowlis, Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub, Idlewild’s Roddy Woomble, percussionist Roy Dodds, bassist Ewen Vernal, and Iain MacDonald on pipes, whistles and flute. The English contingent consists of singers John Tams and Jim Causley, accordionist Andy Cutting, guitarist Ian Carr and Anglo/Swedish fiddler Emma Reid.

Full of colour and contrast, adroitly balancing mighty full-band numbers with quieter interludes, the music overall was unmistakably McCusker’s in both its melodic opulence and its seamless integration of disparate elements. (The Scotsman)
