BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Rachmaninov's Third
Thursday 20th May 2010, 7.00pm
City Halls : Grand Hall
The last of our Northern musical journeys – and the final concert of the season – reaches its climax with Rachmaninov’s ‘American’ symphony, composed in exile in the United States, but looking nostalgically back to his beloved Russia in a great outpouring of lyrical passion. Stefan Solyom launches this all-Russian evening with the outrageously over-the-top fireworks of Rodion Shchedrin’s brilliant orchestral showpiece, Naughty Limericks. He’s joined by one of the most exciting of today’s young lions of the keyboard, Simon Trpceski, in Tchaikovsky’s majestic and deservedly popular First Piano Concerto.
6.15pm Pre-Concert Prelude (in the Recital Room): Geoffrey Baskerville considers Rachmaninov’s final symphony and the orchestral wizardry of Rodion Shchedrin.
Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after the end of the main concert): Simon Trpceski plays a short solo recital of Russian piano music.
This concert is part of the BBC SSO’s North by North-East series.
