BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Martinu's Fantasia Concerto

Thursday 26th November 2009, 7.00pm

City Halls : Grand Hall

Stefan Solyom conducts the most Wagnerian of Dvorák’s symphonies, dark and immensely powerful. He begins the concert with the biggest of the composer’s symphonic poems, a graphic musical portrayal of a Czech folk tale. It was composed right at the end of his life, like Martinu’s Fifth Piano Concerto, which again features the superb young Czech pianist, Ivo Kahanek.

6.15pm Pre-Concert Prelude (in the Recital Room): Jan Smaczny introduces Dvorák’s late tone poem The Golden Spinning Wheel and discusses Martinu’s Fifth Piano Concerto.

Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after the end of the main concert): Ivo Kahanek plays excerpts from Miloslav Kabelác’s Eight Preludes, Op.30 and Smetana’s Concert Etude in C major.

This concert is part of the BBC SSO’s Bohemian Rhapsodies series.
