British jazz vocalist and lyricist, Norma Winstone, performs work from her latest collaboration with long-time partners Italian pianist Glauco Venier, whose influences stem from jazz, classical and folk, and German reeds player Klaus Gesing whose bass clarinet moves from real bass to lyrical and solo flights. Distances, released in 2008, features songs including Cole Porter’s Every Time We Say Goodbye, Peter Gabriel’s Here Comes The Flood, Giant’s Gentle Stride (a original tribute to John Coltrane) and powerful tunes with irresistible melody and visually-evocative words.

With a career spanning forty years, Winstone has worked with most of her peers in British jazz including Michael Garrick, Mike Westbrook, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Jimmy Rowles. She began her career singing jazz standards but became known for her evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation.

Understatement, stillness, technical precision and quiet soulfulness…Winstone’s remarkable voice manages to be both sumptuous and airily ethereal. (John Fordham, The Guardian)

A chamber-jazz trio of rare sensitivity. (Jack Massarik, Evening Standard)
