Maximiliano Martín dazzled audiences with Spohr’s virtuoso concerto in 2008, and Weber’s tour de force makes a fitting sequel. It was inspired by one of the finest clarinettists of his time, and Weber certainly put him through his paces.

Spohr himself features here, marking the 150th anniversary of his death with one of two ‘London’ symphonies. He and Mendelssohn both premiered their pieces with the Philharmonic Society of London and both with such success that they had to stop the performances to encore several movements there and then.
