The Centenary of Olivier Messiaen’s birth will be internationally celebrated throughout 2008 and on his exact anniversary, we present internationally renowned English pianist Peter Donohoe who will perform his work in the world class acoustics of Glasgow’s City Halls.

The composer came not from any particular ‘school’ or style but formed and created his own totally individual musical voice taking rhythmic ideas from India, ancient Greece, the Orient and most importantly adapting the songs of birds from around the world.

Having begun his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Derek Wyndham, Peter Donohoe then travelled to Paris. He had always loved the work of Messiaen and was delighted to be able to study there with him and his wife Yvonne Loroid.

Donohoe is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time – mainly for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique. A romantic and highly charged player, he has been an annual visitor to the BBC Proms for the last seventeen years and has also appeared at many other festivals including six consecutive visits to the Edinburgh International Festival.

Magical playing … the music is irresistibly melodious, inventive and dazzlingly virtuosic. (The Sunday Times)
