Elizabeth Layton, leader of the BBC SSO, directs the strings of the orchestra in this dazzling programme. Prodigiously talented Alison Balsom, is soloist in André Jolivet’s light-hearted Concertino for trumpet, strings and piano of 1948, and she gives a rare performance of the trumpet concerto by Baroque composer Johan Baptist Neruda. The concert finishes with Dvorák’s ravishing five-movement Serenade for Strings, widely regarded as one of the composer’s earliest masterpieces.
