An Evening with Daniel Johnston and Friends
Wednesday 23rd July 2008, 7.30pm
Old Fruitmarket

Indie singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience.
Despite fighting a daily battle with a chronic mental illness that has plagued him nearly his entire life, Johnston has carved out a respectable, influential career as a singer/songwriter of extraordinary talent which has grown since his first crudely recorded cassette was released in 1980.
He became the singer/songwriter of choice of the alternative/underground rock scene, and at various times has had his work championed by members of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Butthole Surfers, Half Japanese, Nirvana (in particular Kurt Cobain), and numerous others.
This show will feature Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Scout Niblett, James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair of Half Japanese. This all star cast of musicians will play short sets of their own songs, before joining forces to back Daniel as his band on this special series of shows.
