BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Thursday Night Series: Russian Winter: Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto 2
Thursday 13th November 2008, 7.00pm
City Halls : Grand Hall

Ilan Volkov launches the Russian Winter series with the most popular of the Rachmaninov concertos, featuring leading French pianist Louis Lortie as soloist, and the wonderful ballet score that Stravinsky wrote as an affectionate homage to his great Russian predecessor Tchaikovsky.
Scènes de Ballet, which Stravinsky wrote for a Broadway review, makes a typically witty, bubbling starter.
6:15pm Pre-concert prelude (in the Recital Room): Writer and broadcaster Stephen Johnson on the very different yet parallel worlds of Stravinsky and Rachmaninov
Post-concert coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Louis Lortie plays two short works by Liszt, Harmonies du Soir and Un Sospiro.
