Prodigiously gifted young American artist Anne Akiko Meyers makes a welcome return to the BBC SSO.

Here she plays Barber’s warmly lyrical violin concerto in an attractive Franco-American programme that proves just how well musically these two cultures can work together. The two French works that Carlo Rizzi has chosen to complete this final concert in The Thursday Night Series could hardly be more different, the delicately-scored pastel shades of Ravel’s delightful Mother Goose ballet contrasting with the big-boned, romantic grandeur of Franck’s only symphony.

6:45pm Pre-concert prelude (in the Recital Room): Critics Michael Tumelty (The Herald) and Kenneth Walton (The Scotsman) reflect on the past season.

Post-concert coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Anne Akiko Meyers plays Debussy Clair de Lune, Debussy/Heifetz Beau Soir, Saint-Saens Swan.
