Recent winner of the Donatella Flick Conductors’ Competition and assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Polish conductor Michal Dworzynski is already making a name for himself as a force to be reckoned with.

Following a great success with the BBC SSO last season, he returns to conduct two concerts in the Thursday Night Series.

Strauss’s ‘Death and Transfiguration’ is both a powerful depiction of an artist’s death and a superb orchestral showpiece. Prokofiev’s great Shakespeare ballet is a wonderful orchestral vehicle too, albeit one shot through with the poignancy of the tragedy of the two young lovers.

One of Ireland’s finest sopranos, Ailish Tynan, sings Mozart’s glorious Exsultate, jubilate and a ravishing aria he wrote in 1789 for the soprano Louise Villeneuve.

6:45pm Pre-concert prelude (in the Recital Room): Simon Lord, Producer BBC SSO, in conversation with Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, on Romeo and Juliet.

Post-concert coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Ailish Tynan sings Mozart’s Abendempfindnung K.523 (Evening Falls), Cole Porter’s The Tale of the Oyster – and, to close, A Word on My Ear by Flanders and Swann!
