BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Thursday Night Series: The Story Tellers: Sibelius, Lemminkainen
Thursday 22nd January 2009, 7.30pm
City Halls : Grand Hall

Finnish conductor John Storgårds and his countryman Olli Mustonen join the BBC SSO for a marvellous programme that begins and ends with music inspired by mythology.
Sibelius’s four Lemminkainen tone poems based on legends from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, are among his most gripping works. And aptly, in her 80th birthday year, we include a short piece that Scots composer Thea Musgrave wrote specially for Sibelius’s 125th Anniversary.
The highly individual playing of Olli Mustonen will be very much to the fore in Prokofiev’s barn-storming Third Piano Concerto.
6:45pm Pre-concert prelude (in the Recital Room): Anthony Sayer and John Storgårds on Nordic myth in music.
Post-concert coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Olli Mustonen plays the last four movements of Prokofiev’s Six Pieces, Op.52: Etude, Scherzino, Andante and Scherzo
