In this second concert featuring Nelson Freire, his interpretation of Schumann’s concerto promises to be something quite special.
Schumann is framed by two 20th century Hungarian giants: Apparitions was Ligeti’s first success in the West after his escape from Hungary, and this ghostly and suggestive work will entrance those unfamiliar with his music.
By contrast, there is nothing suggestive about Bartók’s powerful and illustrative ballet The Miraculous Mandarin, a grim yet fantastically compelling tale of violence and seduction.
Pre-Concert Prelude (6.45pm in the Grand Hall): ‘Appearances and Disappearances: melody and expression in the music of Bartók and Ligeti’ with Professor Peter Nelson.
Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert):
Nelson Freire in a short solo recital of music by Schumann.
