Bartók’s Dance Suite perfectly exemplifies his synthesis of joyous Hungarian folk music with the sophisticated rhythms and harmonies of the 1920s.

Not such a contrast then to the boundless humour and vitality of Beethoven’s Second Symphony, described by Berlioz as “smiling throughout”. And in Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1, Nelson Goerner turns his considerable abilities to one of the most ravishing works in the piano repertoire.

Pre-Concert Prelude (6.45pm in the Grand Hall):BBC SSO music producer Simon Lord in conversation with Rachel Beckles Willson, one of the UK’s leading authorities on Hungarian music.

Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Nelson Goerner plays a selection from Brahms’ Seven Fantasies, Op.116.

Tickets:  £21.50, £17.50, £15, £9
