Ilan Volkov’s distinctive style combines attention to detail with a real sense of drama, and this programme reflects his mature style.
Tuneful, colourful, witty, powerful and exciting, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is a display of luxurious orchestral fireworks. Ligeti’s masterly tonal colours make Lontano one of the most elegant pieces in the modernist canon, and Beethoven’s majestic ‘Emperor’ Concerto is the perfect showcase for the lyrical talents of Till Fellner, one of the most exciting young pianists in Europe today.
Pre-Concert Prelude (6.45pm in the Grand Hall):’Music from afar: folk song and its echoes in the music of Bartók and Ligeti’ with Professor Peter Nelson of Edinburgh University.
Post-Concert Coda (approximately 10 minutes after main concert): Pianist Lynda Cochrane plays excerpts from Bartók’s Mikroskosmos.
