Music spanning four centuries can be heard in this concert: Woolrich’s Ulysses Awakes for solo viola and strings begins with a wafting fragment from Monteverdi, interspersed with melting harmonies in a piece that evokes dark and nocturnal happenings. The evening opens with Britten’s light and playful Simple Symphony, and closes with Schubert’s gloriously poetic Death and the Maiden in Mahler’s lush transcription – a magical experience by candlelight.
