Spell-binding and evocative…she takes folk music to a celestial high. (New York Times)

Capercaillie vocalist Karen Matheson (OBE) has enjoyed a successful parallel solo career over the past decade, from her 1996 debut The Dreaming Sea to 2005’s Downriver, which focused on the Gaelic material that’s been dearest to her heart since childhood. A mesmerising live performer, she’s joined here by regular collaborator James Grant, Capercaillie colleagues Donald Shaw (piano) and Ewen Vernal (double bass), with James MacKintosh (percussion), multi-instrumentalist Anna Massie and a string section.

Wick-born pianist James Ross won unanimous acclaim both for his 2005 New Voices commission at Celtic Connections, An Cuan, and his self-titled debut album last year, each highlighting his lyrical, superbly seamless synthesis of classical finesse and traditional celtic idioms.
