Darkly tragic, emotionally draining, even frightening Shostakovich’s momentous Eighth Symphony was his response to the shattering realities of war.

Vassily Sinaisky conducts this Russian programme that combines Shostakovich’s striking symphonic textures with the UK premiere of Shchedrin’s glorious Fifth Piano Concerto, dedicated to Olli Mustonen.

6.45pm Pre -concert Prelude (free to ticket holders): Writer and Broadcaster Brian Morton, author of Shostakovich: His Life and Music, considers the ‘shrieking sounds’ and ‘road drills of the composer’s Eighth Symphony.

Post-concert Coda (free to ticket holders): Olli Mustonen plays music by Shostakovich.
