Mahler’s Ninth is one of the greatest tragic declarations in the orchestral repertoire. A mountain for any orchestra to climb, this is a remarkable journey for Ilan Volkov and the orchestra.
Mahler felt that he would become a spiritual prophet for our age, so it is appropriate that this passionate and intense work should be paired with a new BBC Commission from the mystical soundworld of the BBC SSO’s Composer in Association, Jonathan Harvey.
6:45pm Pre-concert Prelude (free to ticket holders) : Richard Holloway, former Bishop of Edinburgh and Chair of the Scottish Arts Council, talks to Jonathan Harvey about Music and Spirituality.
Post-concert Coda (free to ticket holders): Mezzo-soprano Louise Collett, a post-graduate student at the RSAMD, performs a selection of Mahler songs, accompanied by Scott Mitchell, piano.
