The New Babylon is a classic of silent Expressionist cinema, and a magnificent example of Shostakovich’s scoring for films and in this special screening, the score is performed by the BBC SSO. This politically-inspired melodrama unfolds in a series of bizarre tableaux, and Shostakovich’s first full length score for a silent motion picture is often extremely funny even on its own. The combination of the BBC SSO, Shostakovich’s wildly satirical brilliant synchronicity of sight and sound, and a classic of silent film conspire to make The New Babylon a compelling lesson in music and movies.
