There is a (probably apocryphal) story that Haydn gave up writing piano concertos after he heard what Mozart had done with the genre.
On the basis of his D major Concerto, he should not have worried – it is a grand and characterful piece, which is juxtaposed here with the First Piano Concerto by Haydn’s pupil, Beethoven.
Written around 1800 it represented a great step into the future for the young composer – and for the history of music.
