Ludwig Spohr played violin in the premiere of Beethoven’s Seventh, and he also knew Mendelssohn – but he is included here as far more than a mere bridge between two better known composers: his Clarinet Concerto is a serious showpiece for the instrument. It was written at white heat for one of the astounding virtuosos of his age, Johann Simon Hermstedt.

6.30pm Pre-Concert Talk (free to ticket holders): Andrew Manze talks about the music in this concert.
