Hearing the music of Beethoven and Haydn together in a concert is incredibly compelling – surprising, perhaps, given that they appear to have been polar opposites and never enjoyed the warmest pupil-teacher relationship.

Both works were premiered early in the 19th century, but for Haydn, at 70, this Mass was a culmination – his last large-scale work. Beethoven, meanwhile, was in his mid-30s and defying all convention with his revolutionary and astounding symphony.
