The undisputed premier-league leaders of Brittany’s pipe-band scene – having won its national championships a record-breaking 18 times – Bagad Kemper have also broken new ground in cross-fertilising Breton traditions with other musical styles. Adapting classical orchestration techniques, together with rock elements, their pioneering original compositions have boldly taken massed bagpipes, bombardes and drums where none have gone before. Having last visited Celtic Connections two years ago, these festival veterans can’t wait to be back. “When we are in the Festival Club there is always a fête!”, band president Jacques Corbin says. “There are a lot of new members in Bagad who want to come here, because everybody speaks all the time about the time they spend here in Glasgow!”
