If ever there was an artist in her prime, it’s Eddi Reader right now. Long recognised as one of the greatest singers ever to come out of Scotland, she has latterly been spreading her wings as a songwriter, too, as highlighted on her 2001 album Simple Soul. In her celebrated recent exploration of the songs of Robert Burns, meanwhile, she’s been united with a mind and talent that perfectly complement her own. “By any measure this was a great vocal performance,” said the Herald’s Michael Tumelty, after seeing her sing burns in Ayr. “Writing this 36 hours later, I’m still haunted by the sound and emotional depth of Reader’s interpretation.” Eddi is currently at work on a new album of contemporary and original material, some of which will be previewed during tonight’s set.
