“Tracey’s piano playing just goes on getting better. It grips you from the very first note with its twists and turns, its droll asides, its romping good humour tinged with plangent melancholy. Following a Tracey improvisation is taking a walk with a hugely knowledgeable but benignly eccentric companion. You never know quite where you will end up, but it is a very interesting journey”. The Observer
Two of the UK’s greatest jazz names, Bobby Wellins and Stan Tracey have been playing together since the late 1950s, featuring alongside the likes of Joe Harriot, Tubby Hayes and Graham Bond in the heyday of London jazz in the 60s, and as members of the Ronnie Scott’s house band they performed with the cream of UK, European and US players throughout the decade and beyond. It was 1965’s collaboration “Under Milkwood” that cemented the partnership with what is still the best selling UK jazz album of all time.
The two legends make a welcome return this year playing a combination of their own compositions and fresh interpretations of jazz standards.
