Young Swedish conductor Stefan Solyom took the BBC SSO players and listeners by storm when he made his debut with the orchestra in February 2005 and there’s no doubt that his Shostakovich 5 will raise the rooof. Sibelius is anothert of his enthusiasms and nowhere is that composer’s more evocative vision of desolate, northern landscapes more powerful than in ‘En Saga’. In perfect contrast to these massive orchestral sounds, Finnish soprano Annu Komsi joins the orchestra for a beautiful, delicately drawn song-cycle by Scots composer Judith Weir.
