Finland, like Scotland, may be a small country, but in terms of music plays a major role on the world stage. Thanks to Sibelius, music is at the heart of Finnish society; Einojuhani Rautavaara, born in 1928, is the leading Finnish composer of his generation. Both share a delectable romanticism and affinity with string music. The Scottish Ensemble will celebrate the great violin tradition of Finland with the music of two of its most famous sons.

To conclude his first season as Artistic Director, Jonathan Morton has chosen one of the epic works for string orchestra, Bartók’s Divertimento. Fusing melody, folk music and Bartók’s ever-present rhythmic vitality, this will be a truly grand conclusion to the season.
