French Music Director Stéphane Denève is joined by three great keyboard players for this musical foray to Paris.
La première partie – la ville-lumière
Our joyful celebration begins with a work composed in Paris, for Paris. Mozart was able to reflect the opulence and richness of the city in his largest symphony to date, Symphony No 31.
Rossini was another visitor to Paris. He retired there to devote more time to la gastronomie! His comic opera Le Voyage à Reims is a high-spirited tale about a group of characters who travel from Paris to Reims.
La deuxième partie – l’esprit de Paris
Poulenc’s cosmopolitan Concerto for Two Pianos and the antique atmosphere of his harpsichord concerto, Concert champêtre are the perfect introduction to the charm and wit of this beloved Parisian composer.
La troisième partie – gaîté parisienne
A light and lively whirlwind tour of colourful Parisian society! Ibert’s rare Suite Symphonique Paris is a collection of very short musical sketches of city scenes from 1930, including, almost inevitably, le Metro<,/em>. Gaîté Parisienne is a ballet set in the Café Tortoni, based on popular music by Jacques Offenbach, including his celebrated Can-Can and the delightful Barcarolle (from the Tales of Hoffmann).
This part will be accompanied by video projections, mixed live, in response to the music.
