One of Mahler’s most popular symphonies, The Fifth is a real virtuoso tour de force, bursting with characteristic Mahlerian energy and emotion – and at its quiet centre, the tender Adagietto, made famous by Visconti’s film Death in Venice. Noriko Ogawa is a welcome returning guest, with Mendelssohn’s ebullient concerto.
