Monday Night Live British Classics with John Wilson

City Halls : Grand Hall

John Wilson is renowned as the world’s leading conductor of light music, but he is also an authority in the sometimes neglected arena of 20th century British orchestral music. In this live broadcast for BBC Radio 3, he joins the BBC SSO to present some charming rarities including ballet music by Holst, Walton’s lively Portsmouth Point overture, Gerald Finzi’s lyrical Cello Concerto, featuring another mainstay of British music, cellist Paul Watkins, and Bax’s 1913 tone poem The Garden of Fand – full of stirring pageantry late-Romantic overtones, and lashings of melody.
