Dan Tepfer certainly plays Bach beautifully – he has it all – the singing tone, the nimble fingers, the rhythmic punch and the plangent chording. But he brings something else to Bach’s variations – he adds improvisations of his own, commenting and reacting to Bach – much as Bach himself would have done in his own day at the keyboard. This is an unalloyed pleasure for lovers of the Goldberg Variations.
