Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, here making a welcome return to the BBC SSO, plays the scintillating test piece which Debussy composed for a clarinet competition in Paris in 1910, and gives the UK Premiere of Bent Sørensen’s new clarinet concerto Serenidad. Finnish conductor HannuLintu opens the programme with Le tombeau de Couperin, Ravel’s tribute to a great Baroque master, and finishes with Sibelius’s expansive Fifth Symphony.
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF PROGRAMME (19/03/13) Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, who was due to perform works by Debussy and Bent Sørensen, is unwell. In a change to the previously advertised programme, Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu opens the concert with Le tombeau de Couperin, Ravel’s tribute to a great Baroque master and follows it with Haydn’s Symphony No.98. Sibelius’s expansive Fifth Symphony brings the afternoon to a close.
