Stelkur (”Redshank” in Icelandic) is an Icelandic contemporary ensemble with a floating membership that has played off and on for about 10 years, principally in Icelandic new music festivals and cultural events. Much of the music they have performed has been specifically written for the ensemble by the composer Charles Ross. During that time the band has concentrated on interpreting music whose underlying content is really about the very personal relationship that develops between musicians/composers and their associative music. Stelkur pieces typically address how this music is radically defined by the nature of the instrument(s) that the individual is in contact with and, possibly most important of all, how then does this very personalised musical language subjectively interact with that of other surrounding musicians.
