BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Afternoon Performance 5 - Tchaikovsky's 'Rococo' Variations

City Halls : Grand Hall

Please Note: This is a past event event.

Don't worry we have plenty more current events to choose from.

Stefan Blunier, General Music Director of the City of Bonn and here making his BBC SSO debut, opens with William Wallace’s intensely romantic symphonic poem The Passing of Beatrice. In a change to the originally advertised programme, Pieter Wispelwey is the soloist for Tchaikovsky’s charming variations for cello and orchestra. The beautiful arrangement which Lyadov made of eight Russian folk-songs are a perfect foil for Shostakovich’s precocious First Symphony, first performed in 1926 when the composer was just 19.

Gemma Rosefield, who was to have been the soloist at this concert, is indisposed (as at 9 March 2012); we are delighted that leading Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey is able to take her place.

Join us for a delicious lunch of soup and sandwiches followed by a selection of cakes, as well as unlimited tea or coffee for just £6.75, from 12.30pm at any of our Afternoon Performance or Discovering Music events. Tea and Symphony is served in the Candleriggs Bar/Recital Room at City Halls and spaces are always in high demand, so be sure to pre-book when you reserve your tickets at the City Halls Box Office.
