There is a hypnotic magic to David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Little Match Girl Passion. It is the kind of piece that slowly draws you in until, as the last notes fade, no one breathes. Lang takes the tale of Hans Christian Andersen’s tragic waif and tells it with a childlike simplicity sure to move you to tears. Here it’s framed by the world premiere of a new piece from Lang, written for the Smith Quartet and soprano Else Torp, and one of his own favourite scores – Pierced.
