Minimal Extreme: Bang on a Can and London Sinfonietta: Reich/Andriessen

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall : Main Auditorium

Minimal is part of the Glasgow Music 2011/2012 Season

One ticket buys you three great concerts back to back: London Sinfonietta and Bang on a Can perform together for the first time. Woven into it is a kind of snapshot portrait of the revered Dutch composer Louis Andriessen from young militant to venerated master.

Reich’s Eight Lines is one of his quintessential up-beat minimal masterworks of the 70s: musically it’s about as life-affirming and exhilarating as anything you’ll hear by him. 2×5 is his new rocky, funky work for Bang on a Can playing live and on tape simultaneously.

Where Reich brings the punch and drive to this programme, Andriessen and Bryars offer the softer, more melancholic sounds. Life is Andriessen’s work written for Bang on a Can with video – a deeply touching and beautiful piece.

Bryar’s Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet is now a cult classic, not least through Tom Waits’ memorable interpretation. The famous Tramp’s song set off so plangently against Bryars rich harmonies draws you in and break your heart.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a change to the programme for this evening. We have worked with the London Sinfonietta to offer two fantastic replacement pieces, not previously heard in Scotland at this level, which we are sure will not disappoint.
